The Writers’ Centre provides peer-tutor writing consultations to Yale-NUS students.
Writers’ Centre tutors are trained to provide support for any kind of writing, academic, creative, or professional, at any stage of the writing process. Students can come with anything from a vague idea to a complete draft and a tutor will work with them to set goals, suggest effective writing and revision strategies, and identify the next steps in their process.
Learn more about each of our tutor
For upper-level consultations, some students prefer to meet tutors that are more familiar with writing in their discipline or genre. If that’s the case, you will find a “specialization” drop-down menu on the schedule that will show the availability of tutors in that area. However, we encourage you to keep an open-mind! You may find that a reader from a different discipline is able to offer you a new perspective on clarity, structure or argument.
For capstone appointments, the role of the Writers’ Centre is to offer secondary support to the primary faculty advisor. Students are invited to book an appointment, with either a Writing Lecturer or a Peer Writing Tutor in their senior year, to discuss: issues of writing, rather than content; and smaller, localised parts of the project rather than the conceptual whole.
What is a Writing Consultation?
Students and Alumni bring all types of writing assignments and projects to the Writers’ Centre, such as:

- Brainstorming
- Outlining
- Drafting
- Argument/Thesis
- Clarity
- Structure
- Style and Grammar
- Citations and Attribution
Scheduling an Appointment
All consultations are by appointment. You can make an appointment online here.
- The Writers’ Centre is open from 10am to 6pm on Monday, Wednesdays, and Fridays, as well as 10am to 10pm on Tuesdays and Thursdays. We are closed on public holidays. Writing consultations are 45-minutes long and begin on the hour. All writing consultations are held in the Writers’ Centre, located on the first floor of the Library.
- Appointments become available up to 14 days in advance. Students are limited to a maximum of two appointments per week.
- If you don’t find an available appointment, you can add your name to a waiting list. To do so, click on the link below the date you would like to make an appointment. Fill in the online form and you will receive an email indicating if an appointment becomes available. After receiving the email, you must return to the schedule and book the appointment.
Cancellations and Missed Appointments
- When appointments are cancelled at the last minute, the consultation slot often goes unfilled and other students miss the opportunity to visit the Writers’ Centre. With this in mind, the Writers’ Centre maintains the following policy.
- Students can cancel up to 6 hours before their appointment without penalty. Appointments cancelled within the 6 hours before your appointment are considered “missed.” If you must cancel within the 6 hours before your appointment, you will not be able to do so on WCOnline. Instead, please contact writers.centre@yale-nus.edu.sg. After 3 “missed” appointments, your ability to book appointments on WCOnline will be blocked until your privileges are reinstated by the Writers’ Centre Programme Manager. If you are over 10 minutes late for your appointment and have not given the Writers’ Centre or your tutor prior notice, the tutor may mark your appointment as “missed” and contact students on the waiting list.
Appointment Feedback
Within 24 hours of your appointment, you will receive an email from WCOnline asking you to provide feedback about your session. This information will be used by staff at the CTL and the Writers’ Centre to learn more about students’ tutoring experiences and to help improve Yale-NUS’ tutoring program. We are grateful for your response.
Personal Data Practices
All peer tutors have access to your tutoring history in the WC Online system. After each appointment, tutors record information about the session in a client report form. These reports detail academic information, such as strategies used, topics discussed, and suggestions for future action. The reports are made accessible to all peer tutors so that the peer tutor can prepare for each session and build upon the student’s previous appointments. Staff at the CTL and the Writers’ Centre closely monitor all reports, and peer tutors receive official personal data/ privacy training and are required to keep all information from the client reports confidential. We take the confidentiality of student information very seriously and violations could be subject to disciplinary action.
If you have any concerns, you can discuss them with staff at either the CTL or the Writers’ Centre.
