Why Anthropology

Anthropology is a social sciences major that explores human diversity in both the present and the past. The major emphasises ethnographic fieldwork, and description, as a perspective and a disposition towards understanding ways of life and human action that take place in our increasingly interconnected world.

DAMON LIM WEI DA, CLASS OF 2021

After spending a summer doing a Mystery Internship in Yangon, Myanmar, I realised I love experiencing and learning about different cultures. I learnt that people are the same–regardless of the language we speak and we all hope for a better future.

FIONA FREEMAN-GRUNDEI, CLASS OF 2020

Anthropology allowed me to study inequality in the world in a personal way. It allowed me to understand the experiences of others, and taught me to be distrustful of my assumptions and be more empathetic towards the people in my life.

MINSOO BAE, CLASS OF 2020

I was drawn to Anthropology due to its reflexivity. The ability of a discipline to grapple its status as an “observer”, often unmarked and assumed to be objective, spoke to my values. Centering lived experiences at the heart of theorising drew me in.
