At Yale-NUS, we are committed to creating an inclusive and supportive environment for all students. The goal of Student Accessibility Support is to give students with physical, cognitive, and psychological conditions the best possible chance at academic excellence. And because everyone’s condition impacts their experiences differently, accommodations can vary. The Student Affairs Office (SAO) is here to help students with accessibility support, both in and out of the classroom.
The SAO Office works closely with the National University of Singapore (NUS) University Health Centre (UHC) to determine appropriate learning accommodations for students who need accessibility support in the classroom. Common accommodations include, but are not limited to:
- Extended time on assignments/examinations
- Reduced distraction environment for examinations
- Note-taking assistance
- Permission to use assistive technology
For students who need accessibility support on the physical campus, accommodations requests will be submitted to the Associate Dean of Students who will work closely with Infrastructure, Health, and Safety and the Residential Colleges (RCs) on assessing the request. There are designated accessibility suites available in each RC for students with mobility limitations. Additionally, there are ramps and tactile flooring throughout much of the campus. Campus accessibility tours can be requested by completing this Request for Accessibility Support form. Students may request use of the NUS accessible van service for complimentary transportation to and from classes on the Yale-NUS and NUS UTown campus.
Requesting Accessibility Services
If you believe you may need accessibility support, start by completing the Support form. Once this is completed, you will meet with the Associate Dean of Students, to discuss your individual needs. If you are unsure of the type of accessibility support you need, you can schedule an appointment to learn more. We will help you navigate every step of the learning accommodations process, as well as refer you to other support systems should you need them. Accommodations cannot be implemented retroactively so students should start the request process as soon as possible.
More details are available on the Accessibility Support FAQ or by emailing accessibility@yale-nus.edu.sg with any questions that you may have.
A note on confidentiality: All administrative parties involved are expected to uphold confidentiality. However, the nature of the certification process means that several people within Registry and the SAO Office, as well as your faculty, will be aware of the accommodations being provided. All notified parties will be expected to uphold confidentiality and are not to disclose any identifying information about students who require accessibility support.
Proctoring Request Form for faculty: Student Accessibility Support can help to coordinate a private space for extended time examinations and/or reduced-distraction accommodations. If this would be helpful to you, please submit a proctoring request on our Qualtrics form at least two weeks before the desired proctor date.
