Optimising Coaching to help students’ thrive.

Coaching is a student service provided by the Wellness Committee under the Student Affairs Office.

Coaching seeks to help students reach their fullest potential. It is a growth-promoting relationship which elicits motivation and facilitates a change process through visioning, goal-setting and accountability.

It is a collaborative effort that seeks to harness the student’s strengths to overcome obstacles and develop resilience. Our certified Life Coach, who will be the Coach, can help students develop and implement wellness plans to achieve their goal. This is done through building a supportive environment for success that leads to sustainable change for the good.

What Makes Coaching Different From Counselling?

There are similarities between coaching and counselling which can be confusing. Students can refer to the image below for the differences between these two distinctive student services to see which suits their needs better.

Well-Being Resources In Yale-NUS College And Which To Go To?

Both coaching and counselling can be incredibly valuable for students. If students would like to seek treatment for a mental health concern, they can contact our Counselling Centre to schedule an appointment. For sexual misconduct matters, students may reach out to a Survivor Support Advisor on campus. If students would like support in navigating life transitions, overcoming challenges, or improving your college experience through focusing on wellness and strengths, coaching could be a great option for them.

Coaching Process

Coaching is open to all Yale-NUS students. To sign up for Coaching, please schedule an appointment with Chiaping Wen.

Before the first session, students will be asked to do a well-being assessment and strengths survey. The first session will cover results of the assessment, setting of expectations, and creating a wellness vision. The student will then design one-month goals to achieve. Our Life coach will guide and support the student to explore motivators, identify obstacles, and achieve their desired goals. Follow-up sessions will be conducted weekly, bi-weekly or monthly to review the goals and progress.
