Protectionism and tariffs have existed for centuries. Essentially every government, industry, and organisation has taken advantage of or been impacted by them. What can explain their longevity and universal application? In this talk, we will consider the history of protectionism, motivations for its use, and the impact on the relevant parties. We will also consider its relevance in today’s environment.

ABOUT THE SPEAKER
Chip Goodyear currently is the president of Goodyear Capital Corporation and Goodyear Investment Company. Previously he was the Chief Executive Officer of BHP Billiton, the world’s largest diversified resources company between 2003 and 2007.
Mr Goodyear held previous positions as executive vice president at Kidder, Peabody & Co., a Wall Street investment bank, and senior vice president and chief financial officer of Freeport-McMoRan Inc., a natural resources company. In 2009, Mr Goodyear served as CEO-Designate of Singapore’s Temasek Holdings. He also served on Temasek’s board.
In addition to his business activities, Mr Goodyear currently serves on a number of philanthropic boards including the Board of Trustees of Yale University and the Board of Trustees of the National WWII Museum (US).
He holds a B.S in Geology & Geophysics from Yale University and an MBA from The Wharton School of Finance, University of Pennsylvania. He has lived in Australia, Singapore and the United Kingdom and now resides in the US, with his wife and two children.
