Throughout our human journey, we have been trying in vain to find ways and means to live together in peace and dignity. Instead, our world continues to be marred by inequality and insecurity: violence and coercion continue to be the primary means to try to settle our differences; and obscene economic and social inequality continues to be our default setting.
Dr ElBaradei will discuss the danger of maintaining the status quo in our increasingly globalised world and the urgent steps that need to be taken to avoid sleepwalking into self-destruction.
ABOUT MOHAMED ELBARADEI
Dr Mohamed ElBaradei was Director General of the International Atomic Energy Agency from 1997 to 2009. He was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize in 2005 for “efforts to prevent nuclear energy from being used for military purposes and to ensure that nuclear energy for peaceful purposes is used in the safest possible way”.
Throughout his career at the United Nations and the World Health Organisation, Dr ElBaradei made it a priority to promote the peaceful uses of nuclear power, striving to make radiation therapy available in less-developed countries for the treatment of diseases such as cancer and malaria.
