Global Affairs students relish the opportunity to study the world by spending a semester or longer in an overseas institution. This gives them the chance to enhance their understanding of the world through deep immersion in the history, culture and society of different countries. While on study abroad, Global Affairs students also often take foreign language classes to deepen their ability to engage with people from different backgrounds. These courses may count towards their major requirements and even inspire them to pursue a particular topic for their capstone.
Where to go for Study Abroad?
Global Affairs students should talk to the Head of Studies to find out more about prospective places or programmes for study abroad. Some of the study and summer abroad institutions that Yale-NUS Global Affairs students have gone to include:
- Leiden University in the Netherlands
- Bocconi University in Italy
- Sciences Po in France
- The School of Oriental and African Studies (SOAS) at the University of London
- Yale University (and especially its Department of Political Science) in the United States
- Yale University’s Jackson Institute for Global Affairs in the United States
- Pontificia Universidad Católica de Chile in Chile
- University College Utrecht, the Netherlands
When to go for Study Abroad?
The timing of your Study Abroad programme is largely dependent on your personal schedule. Either semester in Year 3 would be a good time. This enables students to gain a flavour of the Global Affairs courses on offer at Yale-NUS in their second year, and then pursue more specialised courses in their specific interest areas during their time abroad.
In general, the Global Affairs major is flexible. However, students are typically not permitted to go on study abroad programmes during their final year.
