Our Favourite Memories

What do making ondeh-ondeh, char kway teow and the gifting of ducks as a symbol of good luck remind our Yale-NUS community of? None other than the Class of 2022! Leading up to Graduation, our staff and faculty share their fondest memories of the Class and reveal their well wishes for our graduands as they embark on their new journeys.

Orientation: Setting Sail

Orientation kickstarts the Yale-NUS education for first-year students and provides them with an opportunity to meet their classmates, immerse themselves into the community and the larger campus life, and learn about the resources at the College. In 2018, the theme for orientation was “Setting Sail”, which symbolised helping incoming students conquer the waves in the stormy sea of college life, and assisting them in charting their course and sailing into an ocean of opportunities and possibilities. The year’s Orientation also featured a new Residential College (RC) Community Building activity, where each RC participated in a community service project which offered students exposure to diverse spaces, causes and communities beyond the College’s campus, as well as encouraged them to develop a sense of civic engagement.

First Year Assembly ’18

On 10 August 2018, weeks of orientation culminated in First Year Assembly ‘18, an annual ceremony where new students are formally welcomed by the Yale-NUS community. Aside from speeches by key College figures, the ceremony also featured a performance by Chia Yam Chong (Class of 2020) and the Yale-NUS Barbershop Chorus.

Week 7 Learning Across Boundaries (LAB) 2018

In the Week 7 Learning Across Boundaries (LAB) programme, first-year students, faculty and staff engage in learning projects that explore themes of the Common Curriculum outside the confines of a traditional classroom. Week 7 LAB projects are faculty-generated initiatives that are organised in collaboration with the Centre for International & Professional Experience (CIPE).
