While on study abroad, Mathematical, Computational and Statistical Sciences (MCS) students can enhance their understanding of the discipline by taking specialist courses that Yale-NUS does not offer. These courses may even count towards major requirements ) or inspire students to pursue a particular topic for their capstone.
Where to go for Study Abroad
MCS majors have gone on study abroad programmes in Beijing, Columbia University, Harvard University, London, University of Oxford and Yale University; some also proceed to such institutions as graduate students. There is no prescription on where students can take a semester abroad, or guarantee that courses from another institution will yield MCS major credit at Yale-NUS. Students who are stuck for ideas of where to study, can look into some of the institutions listed below. Students should discuss where they would like to go with their Major advisor or the Head of Studies (HoS) to come to a decision that is suitable for the student,.
The following are institutions that the Centre for International & Professional Experience (CIPE) has approved for semester study abroad programmes. A parenthetical (M) means that this institution is recommended for those interested in Mathematics, (C) for Computer Science, etc.
- (M, C) University of British Columbia, Canada
- (M, C) Amherst, USA
- (M, C) Wellesley College, USA

Summer Study Abroad
It is also possible to arrange a summer study abroad programme, with support from CIPE.
When to go on Study Abroad
MCS majors typically spend one semester of their third year abroad, but there is no obligation to do so. There is no preference between semester 1 and semester 2, provided students have completed enough of the important MCS courses before their semester abroad. The MCS HoS can help students decide which courses they should complete before a semester abroad.
