Yale-NUS alumnus receives Fulbright Singapore Student Program award
Class of 2018 alumnus Feroz Khan is the first Yale-NUS graduate to receive the Fulbright Singapore Student Program award
Yale-NUS College alumnus Feroz Khan (Class of 2018) is the first graduate from the College to receive an award under the Fulbright Singapore Student Program to pursue graduate studies in the United States. On average, the award is given to two students from Singapore each year.
The Fulbright Singapore Student Program is part of the Fulbright Program, the most prestigious international educational exchange programme sponsored by the US Government and operates in more than 160 countries worldwide. To date, 60 Fulbright alumni have been recognised as Nobel Laureates, and 37 have served as heads of state or government.
After graduating from Yale-NUS College in 2018 with a Bachelor of Arts with Honours in Environmental Studies, Mr Khan worked as a researcher in the Disaster Analytics for Society Lab (DASL) at Nanyang Technological University. During his time there, he worked on post-earthquake recovery and humanitarian aid allocation in Nepal, developing tools and models of post-disaster information that better represent and highlight people’s needs after a disaster, especially in ways that are sensitive to social vulnerability and inequity.
Under the Fulbright Program, Mr Khan will be pursuing a Master of Science in Disaster Resilience Leadership at Tulane University in New Orleans, Louisiana. He hopes to pursue research on how to reduce disaster risk and improve post-disaster recovery, making communities safer in the Anthropocene, especially in Southeast Asia.
Mr Khan said, “I feel incredibly humbled and grateful for this opportunity to pursue graduate studies on disaster resilience, especially given our current moment of profound social, environmental, and public health crises. Yale-NUS kindled and nurtured my passion for environmental justice and modelled what a supportive, loving community can do to inspire change. I’m especially grateful to my faculty referees, Professor Michael Maniates and Associate Professor Anju Paul, for their transformative and inspiring pedagogy, and to the late Mr Paul Wilt (then Senior Associate Director of Alumni Affairs and Strategic Events) for his guidance and mentorship. I look forward to bringing the Kingfisher spirit into the Fulbright and Tulane communities!”
Since graduating, Mr Khan continues to play an active role in his alma mater and currently serves on the Yale-NUS Alumni Council, an elected, voluntary group that spearheads alumni engagement and supports efforts to build a stronger and more inclusive Yale-NUS community. During his undergraduate days, he was active in the Student Government, athletics and student campaigns around climate change and political engagement.
